Acoustics of Indian instrument

This work was done under the guidance of Dr. Ronojoy Adhikari at Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc).

The Sarode is a multi-stringed musical instrument used widely in the classical music of northern parts of India. It is a lute like instrument with a unique goat skin membrane over which the bridge is connected.

We performed a mathematical modeling of the physical instrument to characterize its sound. We computed the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the sarode membrane, the main radiating element of the instrument.
